Sewing 101

SEWING 101

Sewing 101 is the most basic sewing class at The Fabric Studio. In this class we will spend time going over how to use your sewing machine (threading, winding the bobbin, sewing straight lines, adjusting stitch type and size). Once you’ve had time to play with and get comfortable on your machine we will sew a pillowcase, and you will receive printed directions so you can make this project over and over again at home! This project will use quilting cottons, which are available in abundance at the store, and will also teach skills such as straightline sewing, cutting, assembling, and sewing seams. This class is for people who do not yet know how to sew but want to learn!

Once you have learned the basic version in the pattern the possibilities are endless (dress, tunic, top, sleeveless, short sleeves, long sleeves, keyhole neck or not, peter pan collar, and the list goes on!) The other great thing about this dress is that it looks great when made with quilting cotton, but can be made with other fabric too (voile, chambray, linen, double gauze, etc).  This is a great class if you feel comfortable and confident on your sewing machine and have completed a variety of other projects such as pillows, quilts, basic skirts, etc.  In this 3-session class you will learn about pattern markings, sizing, shirring (using elastic thread), lining, pockets, sewing a keyhole curve (optional), and finishings. Devon will go over types of knits, tips and tricks for working with them, and the various differences and benefits to working with knits over woven.
